The design of the flag has three horizontal stripes of yellow green and red with a five pointed white star in the middle.
New flag of myanmar. In 1988 the country changed its name from the socialist republic of the union of burma to the union of myanmar. Others have criticized the design of the flag claiming that it looks similar to the lithuanian flag. In 2006 the country adopted a new flag which consisted of three horizontal stripes of the colors green yellow and red. The three colors of the stripes are meant to symbolize solidarity peace and tranquility and courage and decisiveness respectively.
The new design harkened back to the 1943 yellow green red tricolour but instead of the peacock used on the earlier standard a white star was set in the centre of the flag. Modern state flags date from the 1940s when myanmar was starting to gain its independence from the colonial british empire most state flags were designed and adopted after independence in 1948. The current flag of myanmar was adopted on 21 october 2010 to replace the former flag in use since 1974. The announcement of the new flag was made on state television just prior to the ceremonies which were supposed to take place simultaneously all over the country.
The new flag was introduced along with implementing changes to the country s name which were laid out in the 2008 constitution. Myanmar ratified a new constitution in 2008 in effect january 2011 and one of its provisions was the adoption of a new national flag. However the flag remained the same. At the top left corner of the green line was a five pointed star.
The flags of burmese states and regions exhibit a variety of regional influences and local histories as well as different styles and design principles. The colors of red green and yellow are traditionally pan african and when the new flag of myanmar was adopted many mistook it as a flag of an african country. The new flag has horizontal stripes of yellow green and red with a big white star in the middle.
